Better Business Bureau is partnering with the National Foundation of Credit Counseling in launching the 2nd annual National Protect Your Identity Week Oct. 17 – 24, 2009. This event coincides with BBB’s Secure Your ID Day to be held on Oct. 17, 2009.

Your BBB serving Northwest Florida is taking the lead in educating the panhandle during PYIW by partnering with Pensacola’s Cat Country 98.7 FM and NewsRadio 1620, Panama City’s WJHG NBC 7 and Gilmore Services to provide free document shredding and information consumers can use to protect themselves from identity theft.

Bring up to 50 pounds of documents to be shredded on site, free-of-charge and take home tips and resources you need to help protect yourself. Please do not tie bags.

Identity theft claimed more than 10 million victims in 2008, a 22 percent increase over 2007. According to a report from Javelin Strategy and Research, low-tech methods for stealing personal information are still the most popular for identity thieves. Of the cases where consumers knew how their identity was compromised, stolen wallets and physical documents accounted for 43 percent of all identity theft, while online methods accounted for only 11 percent.
